UU Common Endowment Fund Selects Untapped Capital to Accelerate Community Investing
The UU Common Endowment Fund (UUCEF) has engaged Untapped Capital Consulting as a specialized advisor to help build and scale its Community Investing (CI) program, a mission-aligned portfolio that currently represents approximately 5% of the UUCEF endowment.
UUCEF’s Community Investments provide capital to support development initiatives in low-income communities in the United States and in low- and middle-income countries. These investments are made through mission-driven institutions such as community development financial institutions (CDFIs), credit unions, loan funds, and other intermediaries that provide capital to expand access to affordable housing, small business financing, and community-based economic development. In line with our Investment Policy Statement, the CI portfolio prioritizes undercapitalized institutions and investments that are led by and benefit Black and Indigenous people of color(BIPOC) communities.
The selection of Untapped Capital follows a subcommittee review of several providers and reflects UUCEF’s decision to retain investment discretion while adding targeted expertise for sourcing, diligence, and process design.
Under the plan, Untapped Capital will lead Phase 1 (Foundation); enhancing the systems, tools, and decision-making infrastructure for CI – followed by initial participation in Phase 2 (Deploy) to support and accelerate sourcing new investments and evaluating these and rollover investments. UUCEF expects to pair this bespoke work with a platform partner for ongoing research and reporting, ensuring rigorous impact and performance measurement. The advisory choice emphasizes a values-forward, high-touch approach for non-mainstream community opportunities, aligned with UUCEF’s mission and Investment Policy Statement.
What UUCEF Investors should know
- Scope & sequencing: Phase 1 establishes CI governance, templates, and tracking; Phase 2 begins deployment, and Phase 3 (Reporting) will deliver Community Impact portfolio-level impact reporting for internal and external stakeholders.
- Why Untapped: They are a boutique, principal-led advisory suited to values-intensive, community-focused deals, complementing platform partners for scale reporting and monitoring.
Bottom Line
Investors can expect a clearer CI process, faster but disciplined deployment, and improved transparency on both impact outcomes and financial performance; with UUCEF maintaining final decision rights and alignment to mission throughout.
